Fall TV Season Preview
Network: Fox
Premiere Date: Friday, September 20
Time Slot: Fridays, 8:00-9:00 p.m.
Competition: Family Matters (ABC), Dave's World (CBS), Unsolved Mysteries (Fox)
Cast: Jerry O'Connell, Sabrina Lloyd, John Rhys-Davies, Cleavant Derricks

Track Record: While Sliders may be a cross between the cult hits Quantum Leap and The X-Files, it has yet to develop its own cult following. The sci-fi drama finished its second season in the ratings basement as Nielsen's No. 125, down from the previous year.

Bottom Line: Sliders has suffered because of an erratic broadcast schedule since its debut as a mid-season replacement on Fox in 1994. It slips into its first complete season this September with the same motley crew of four--a physics student (O'Connell), his physics professor (Rhys-Davies), a computer geek (Lloyd), and an R&B singer (Derricks)--who travel to parallel universes (present-day Earth--only different) through a "wormhole" in O'Connell's basement. This season the show will literally get brighter as production moves from misty Vancouver -- where The X-Files is shot -- to sunny Hollywood. Also, expect to see more of those drama-inducing evil aliens from last season's cliffhanger. But unless America's TV audience slides into a parallel universe where half-baked sci-fi shows are extremely popular, don't hold your breath for Sliders to burn up the ratings.

Last Season's Average Nielsen Rating: 5.9 (125th)
