These are scenes from the October 16, 1998 sixth revision draft of the script for the episode The Unstuck Man with teleplay by Bill Dial & Chris Black and story by David Peckinpah & Keith Damron. These scenes did not make it into the final episode due to time and story considerations.|
The Sliders first jaunt into town after the slide was originally supposed to yield a few lost lines...and an interesting billboard in the background...
Fine with me. Lots of people know
me. Just hope somebody knows you.
Maggie and Rembrandt react to that. Then the three of them head for the road. Rembrandt tosses his gun into the bush.
(re: the gun)
It was empty.
Quinn 2 pauses a moment, reacting to that, then catches up with Remmy and Maggie.
A WIDER ANGLE
as the three of them start up the road. In the distance, out of a clear sky, we see a flash of lightning. Not a normal one, something neon-ultra-violet and electronic looking.
Did you see that?
Purple lightning? In a clear sky?
A pause as they walk up the road...then...
Sure. Why not? Makes as much sense
as anything else today.
Looks like the stuff I saw in the
EXT. CITY STREET - DAY
Rembrandt and Maggie walking along the sidewalk. Quinn 2 is following along behind, evidently absorbed in concentration. The sky has clouded up considerably, and there are threatening looking thunderheads in the distance. A couple of people round a corner, running fast, as jostle past Rembrandt and Maggie.
(then to Maggie)
What's their hurry?
They look back at Quinn 2.
You think he's okay?
It's like he's in some kind of a
A BIG POSTER
on a wall. It reads: APOCALYPSE MAYBE! RAPTURE RAVE! THE ARTIST FORMERLY KNOWN AS ELVIS. JOHN TESH AND MARILYN MANSON, TOGETHER AGAIN...SIEGFRIED AND TELLER...HOLLYWOOD BOWL...ONE NIGHT ONLY. END THE WORLD WITH US.
EXT. CITY STREET - DAY
Rembrandt, Maggie and Quinn 2 are walking up the street, amazed at what's going on. The city seems on the edge of chaos -- people are running up and down the streets, some are gathered in groups listening to street preachers working from apple boxes -- men and women give out brochures for various causes. And above and around it all, very strange atmospheric lightning, synthesized thunder claps, mini-vortices are opening and closing randomly.
A group of people have gathered to hear a street preacher, a gaunt man with long hair and beard and a funereal tone.
'I looked and there was a pale green
horse. Its rider's name was Death,
and Hell followed him!'
ANGLE ON REMBRANDT, MAGGIE, QUINN 2
as they pause to listen to this guy.
I promise you that the end of days is
nigh. Look to the skies! There will
be hurricanes and tornados,
earthquakes, and fire without end.
The heathen will be ground into the
dust, consigned to an eternity of
And that's about the point we came in...
During his conversation with Diana later in the episode, Geiger originally had a little more to say about the Curies...
When he first came to us, Quinn
Mallory couldn't walk, and doctors
had given him no hope whatsoever.
Look at him now. And just imagine a
world without any hunger, or disease.
Through the Combine we can create
such a place.
But at what cost?
For what it could give science and
mankind, we should be willing to pay
a high price indeed.
He looks at a Diana a moment.
There has always been a price for any
real advance. The Curies gave their
lives for their discovery, but look
what the world gained as a result,
and how many millions of lives
have been saved since. This amalgamate
Quinn is only a temporary distortion.
It proves that my calculations for
combining dimensions work.
What about the other Quinn? And his
brother? I promised their companions
that we would do everything we could
to re-constitute their friends.
Did you find yourself wondering what Geiger was going to use to merge two cities together if it took that large gun just to do one person? Well, the original script had one scene that told the tale...
Geiger just nods his head and turns to another monitor. Figures are flashing by. The countdown has reached 3:00...2:59...2:58...
EXT. ROOF OF LAB - DAY (STOCK)
A row of giant atenna dishes rotate into position, and begin to glow with red intensity.
INT. DIANA'S OFFICE
Quinn 2 is working at her computer terminal. The data we see is the same we just saw on Geiger's monitor. The countdown continuing.
And the antennas pop up one last time in the script when Diana stops the countdown (without seeing anything she's typing...sigh)
ANGLE ON CONSOLE
where the countdown is at minus 10...9...8...7...6... and it stops. Diana has turned off the combine.
EXT. LAB ROOF - DAY (STOCK)
the antenna dishes shut down, and stop glowing.
And then it cuts to the preacher on the street and the bit of humor this episode needed.
